The Loose Lower Denture Challenge

If your lower denture never seems as secure as your upper denture, you are not alone. Many things complicate the fit of a lower denture and it is a common issue with many denture wearers. Compared to an upper denture a lower denture does not have the roof of the mouth (palate) for surface area support and typically has a smaller, thinner ridge as a foundation. Muscle interference such as the tongue, the floor of the mouth, the lips and cheeks want to lift the denture off of the ridge that supports it.

Many solutions are available to aid in the fit of a lower denture. Some denture wearers use denture adhesive to help with fit, however, this is usually messy, requires multiple applications throughout the day and may be ingested as saliva and fluids wash it away.

One excellent long-term solution to keep your denture in place is dental implants. Dental implants increase comfort, stability and confidence, enabling you to chew more effectively by securing the lower denture in place. Dental implants also prevent bone loss in the areas they are placed by stimulating the bone and maintaining the facial structure. Chewing power increases by approximately 30% with just two implants (the minimum requirement to retain a lower denture) and allows for harder, more nutritious foods to be chewed effectively, aiding in digestion and having a positive impact on your overall health. By securing a lower denture in place with dental implants, it will be less likely to dislodge during chewing, laughing, yawning or other facial movements and give you more confidence with your dentures in social situations.

The most common thing we hear from denture patients who have had dental implants placed is that “it is the best thing” they’ve ever done.
