I Remember

I Remember

Posted on: November 11, 2016 by Michael Battell

Today is Remembrance Day.  A day for us to honour the heroes who sacrificed so much for peace.

Today, I remember my Grandfather who fought bravely in World War II with the Black Watch, Royal Highlanders, Scottish Regiment. He went between Africa, Egypt, Sicily and Normandy with his Regiment, going where they were needed. My Grandfather did not talk often about his time in the war or the horrors he experienced. He lost most of his friends and was lucky to make it home alive.

I cannot imagine the experiences he endured or the fortitude it took to continue fighting after witnessing and being a part of events so devastating. I thank him, and all of the men and women, who with their bravery, compassion, loyalty and strength, gave of themselves so that we could enjoy the freedoms we do today.

My kind, loving and gentle Grandfather passed away 5 years ago. I miss him every day but I feel blessed that I had the chance to know him and have him in my life. Today, I honour him and all of those who have served and continue to serve their country in the name of freedom. You are all heroes and deserve our utmost respect
